After arriving in Buenos Aires, Argentina at 10:00 AM, I went through immigration, customs and met other people from the group traveling to Antarctica. We were transported to the hotel and upon arriving there were treated to a delicious brunch with cold cuts, salads, fruit, chicken curry, ravioli and other dishes to prepare us for our afternoon city tour. The two other Grovesnor teacher fellows on this expedition with me, Kathy (teacher from Alabama) and Ellie ( from Toronto, California), connected and were delighted to see each other as we have planning this adventure for months.
Our hotel is located in the Recoleta part of the city - which is a fairly upscale and historical area. Buenos Aires is of course the capitol of Argentina. The city center's population is about 3 million and with the suburbs, the total inhabitants is approximately 15 million. On the tour we learned about the early history of Argentina and how it has strong Spanish and Italian influences. We heard stories about the then Cardinal Francis living in Buenos Aires as a common person riding public transportation and or sitting on a bench at a park or square.
We saw the Plaza de Mayo (because it was May 25th, 1810 when the revolution against Spain began.

The Recoleta Cemetery is not a typical cemetery as many famous politicians, scientists, poets and other wealthy Argentineans. All 6400 mausoleums of the cemetery were built in the 1880's but exhibit a great deal of architectural styles. Also, Eva Perones remains are here with her family (second photo).
